Please read the attached Operative Instructions After a Dental Filling and follow all the precautions during the recovery period.
Immediate Care
1. Numbness: If local anesthesia was used, your mouth and tongue may be numb for a few hours after the procedure. Avoid chewing on the side of your mouth where the filling was placed until the numbness wears off to prevent accidental injury.
2. Pain and Discomfort: It is normal to experience some sensitivity and discomfort after the filling. Over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help manage this. Follow the instructions on the medication’s label or as prescribed by your dentist.
Eating and Drinking
1. Diet: Once the numbness has worn off, you can resume eating. However, avoid chewing hard, sticky, or crunchy foods on the side of the filling for at least 24 hours.
2. Temperature Sensitivity: You might experience sensitivity to hot or cold foods and drinks for a few days. This is normal and should subside. Use a toothpaste for sensitive teeth if needed.
Oral Hygiene
1. Brushing and Flossing: Continue your regular oral hygiene routine. Brush and floss carefully around the filled tooth to keep the area clean and prevent infection.
2. Mouthwash: You may use an antiseptic mouthwash to help keep the area clean. Follow the instructions on the product’s label or as recommended by your dentist.
Activity and Rest
1. Normal Activities: You can resume normal activities immediately after the procedure, but avoid strenuous activities for the rest of the day.
2. Rest: Rest as needed to help your body recover.
Sensitivity
1. Mild Sensitivity: It is normal to experience mild sensitivity to pressure, sweet foods, or temperature changes for a few days to a week after the filling. If sensitivity persists or worsens, contact our office.
Follow-Up Care
1. Monitoring: Keep an eye on the treated area for any signs of persistent pain, swelling, or unusual symptoms.
2. Regular Check-Ups: Attend regular dental check-ups to ensure the filling remains intact and your overall oral health is maintained.
