At Happy Dentistry, we want to ensure that your teeth whitening treatment is as effective and comfortable as possible. By following these preoperative instructions, you can help maximise the results and minimise any discomfort.

1. Brush and Floss Before Your Appointment

Ensure that your teeth are clean by brushing and flossing before your whitening appointment. This helps the whitening agent penetrate better, leading to more effective results.

2. Get a Dental Cleaning Before Whitening

For the best results, consider getting a professional dental cleaning prior to your whitening treatment. This helps remove plaque and tartar, allowing the whitening agent to work more effectively.

3. Avoid Staining Foods and Drinks

For 24 hours before your appointment, avoid consuming staining foods and drinks, such as coffee, tea, red wine, dark sodas, or berries. These can affect the whiteness of your teeth during treatment.

4. Avoid Smoking

For optimal results and to prevent staining, avoid smoking for at least 24 hours before your teeth whitening appointment.

5. Discuss Tooth Sensitivity

If you have a history of tooth sensitivity, please inform your dentist before the whitening procedure. We may recommend using desensitizing toothpaste for a few days leading up to your appointment to help reduce any discomfort.

6. Take Pain Relief If Needed

If you tend to experience sensitivity or discomfort after teeth whitening, you may take Panadol (paracetamol) or Nurofen (ibuprofen) about 30 minutes before your appointment. This can help minimize post-treatment sensitivity.

7. Eat Before Your Appointment

Teeth can be more sensitive right after whitening, so it’s a good idea to eat a meal before your appointment to avoid discomfort when eating immediately after the treatment.

8. Schedule Your Whitening Two Weeks Before Any Major Events

If you have an important event coming up, it’s recommended to schedule your teeth whitening at least two weeks before. This allows any post-whitening sensitivity to subside and ensures the full effect of the treatment is visible.

Final Thoughts

By following these preoperative instructions, you can prepare for a successful and comfortable teeth whitening session at Happy Dentistry. Our team, led by Dr. Jenny Liu, is here to make sure you achieve a brighter, more confident smile.

Important
If you’ve recently had aesthetic facial treatments (e.g. lip fillers, dermal fillers, or Botox), please avoid any dental procedures (including whitening) for at least two weeks before or after to minimize risks of swelling, infection, or interference with results.
