Teeth whitening treatments
If you are looking at how to get whiter teeth, there are several options. The right one depends on your teeth, the type of staining and how quickly you want to see a change. Your dentist will talk you through what suits you at your assessment.
Cost and health funds
The cost of whitening depends on whether in-chair or take-home whitening suits your teeth, and on anything your assessment finds that needs treating first. Your dentist gives you a quote before any whitening starts.
Whether your extras cover pays anything towards it depends on your fund and your level of cover.
We offer HICAPS on-the-spot claiming, so if you have private health extras cover you can claim at the practice on the day.

FAQs
How white can my teeth get after whitening?
It depends on your natural tooth colour, the type of staining and the treatment you choose, so results vary from person to person. Your dentist will talk you through what is realistic for your teeth at your assessment.
How long does teeth whitening take?
In-chair whitening usually takes about 60–90 minutes. Take-home whitening kits typically take 1–2 weeks, depending on your desired level of whitening.
Does teeth whitening work on crowns, veneers or fillings?
No. Whitening treatments will only affect your natural tooth enamel. Crowns, veneers or fillings will not change colour with whitening, so your dentist will discuss how to match the final result.
Is teeth whitening safe during pregnancy or for sensitive teeth?
For most, professional teeth whitening is safe when your teeth and gums are healthy, but it’s usually recommended to avoid whitening during pregnancy or if you have untreated deep decay or severe enamel wear. If your teeth are already sensitive, tell your dentist at your assessment, as they may suggest a toothpaste for sensitive teeth in the days before you start.
How can I maintain the whiteness of my teeth long-term?
Everyday habits make the biggest difference. Brush twice a day, clean between your teeth, and limit dark-staining food and drinks such as coffee, tea, red wine and berries. Rinsing with water afterwards helps. Smoking restains teeth quickly, so avoiding it helps your shade last longer.
Your shade will still soften gradually over time. If you come in for your regular check-up and clean every 6 months, we’ll include a free top-up take-home whitening gel, for both in-chair and take-home whitening patients. Your check-up and clean is charged as usual. Your dentist will let you know whether a top-up suits you.
How much does teeth whitening cost in Melbourne?
There is no set fee, because the cost depends on whether in-chair or take-home whitening suits you and on your assessment. Your dentist gives you a quote before any whitening starts. Whitening is cosmetic, so check with your health fund whether your extras cover pays anything towards it.
