Cost and health funds
The cost of a custom mouthguard depends on what your check-up finds. Your dentist gives you a quote before anything is made.
If you have extras cover, your fund may pay a benefit. What you get back depends on your level of cover.
We offer HICAPS on-the-spot claiming, so if you have private health extras cover you can claim at the practice on the day.

FAQs
What is a sports mouthguard?
A sports mouthguard is a protective dental appliance worn over your teeth during sports or physical activities to prevent injuries to your teeth, lips, tongue, and jaw.
Why are sports mouthguards important?
Wearing a sports mouthguard reduces the risk of dental injuries such as chipped or knocked-out teeth, cut lips, and jaw fractures, helping you stay protected while playing contact or high-impact sports.
Which sports require a mouthguard?
Any sport with a risk of face contact, impact or falls can benefit. This includes contact sports like rugby, boxing, hockey and martial arts, but also non-contact sports like skateboarding, mountain biking or cricket, where airborne objects or falls can still cause damage.
What types of sports mouthguards are available and how do they differ?
There are essentially three types: stock (ready-to-wear off the shelf), boil-and-bite (heated in water and then moulded), and custom-fitted (made by a dentist from impressions of your teeth).
How do I choose the right mouthguard for protection and comfort?
Look for a mouthguard that fits snugly and stays securely in place, allows normal breathing and speaking, is made of durable impact-absorbing material, and is suitable for your sport.
How is a custom sports mouthguard made?
At Happy Dentistry, we take impressions of your teeth to create a mouthguard that fits securely and comfortably, allowing you to breathe and speak easily.
Are sports mouthguards comfortable to wear?
Yes, custom mouthguards are designed to fit snugly and comfortably, making them easier to wear during sports without interfering with breathing or speaking.
How do I care for and maintain my sports mouthguard?
After each use rinse it with cold water, occasionally brush it with a soft toothbrush (not toothpaste, which may scratch it), store it in a ventilated case, avoid leaving it in hot places, and replace it when it becomes worn, torn or no longer fits properly.
How often should I replace my sports mouthguard?
It is recommended to replace your mouthguard every 12 months or sooner if it shows signs of wear, damage, or if your teeth have shifted due to growth or orthodontic treatment.
Can I wear a sports mouthguard if I have braces or other dental work?
Yes. If you have braces, bridges or other dental appliances, it’s especially important to use a properly fitted mouthguard. A custom-fitted type from a dental professional will accommodate your braces or dental work.
