Cost and health funds
What you pay depends on how much cleaning your teeth and gums need. Your dentist checks your gums first and gives you a quote before any cleaning starts.
With extras cover, your fund may pay a benefit. The amount depends on the policy you hold.
We offer HICAPS on-the-spot claiming, so if you have private health extras cover you can claim at the practice on the day.
If your child is eligible for the Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS), it can cover cleaning, although a gap payment may apply for some treatments. Our children’s dentistry page explains who is eligible.

FAQs
Is a deep clean painful?
Most people feel little or no discomfort. If your gums are sensitive, your dentist can apply a numbing gel or local anaesthetic to keep you comfortable.
How long does a deep clean take?
A standard appointment usually takes 30 to 60 minutes. If root planing is needed, your dentist may split it across two visits.
Can I eat after a scale and clean?
Yes. If anaesthetic was used, wait until the numbness wears off, and avoid very hot or hard foods straight afterwards.
How much does dental cleaning cost in Melbourne?
It depends on how much cleaning your teeth and gums need, so there is no single fee. Your dentist checks your gums first and gives you a quote before your clean, and your health fund can tell you what you will get back.
What is a deep cleaning at the dentist?
It is a professional dental cleaning that removes plaque, tartar (hardened plaque) and bacteria from your teeth and from just below the gumline, where brushing and flossing cannot reach. If your gums have pulled away from your teeth, it can also include root planing (smoothing the root surfaces).
Is a deep clean used to treat gum disease?
It can be. Removing plaque and tartar from above and below the gumline is usually the first step in managing gum disease (periodontal disease). Your dentist checks your gums and will explain whether you need more frequent cleans or anything further.
How should I look after my teeth after a deep clean?
Your gums may feel tender and your teeth a little sensitive to hot and cold for a while. Brush gently with a soft toothbrush, keep flossing carefully and choose softer foods for the first day or two. A toothpaste for sensitive teeth can help. If you have severe pain, heavy bleeding or swelling, call us.
