Educational

Kenalog in Orabase is commonly used to treat:

- Mouth ulcers (aphthous ulcers / canker sores)

- Traumatic ulcers (from biting or sharp teeth)

- Ulcers or irritation from braces

- Inflamed or painful soft tissues

Triamcinolone acetonide is a medium‑strength topical corticosteroid that reduces inflammation, calms immune response, decreases pain, speeds healing, and shortens ulcer duration.

What is Orabase?

Orabase is an adhesive protective paste (gelatin, pectin, CMC) that:

- Adheres to moist oral surfaces

- Forms a long‑lasting protective barrier

- Shields ulcers from irritation

- Helps the steroid stay in contact longer

- Provides immediate soothing

- Allows slow, effective absorption

How to apply

1. Gently dry the ulcer.

2. Apply a pea‑sized amount.

3. Press, do not rub.

4. Use 3–4 times per day, especially after meals and before bed.

5. Avoid eating/drinking for 30 minutes after use.

Duration

- Use until healed (typically 3–5 days; max 10–14 days).

- Stop immediately when the ulcer resolves.

- Not for long‑term or preventive use.

Safety

Do NOT use for:

- Fungal infections

- Viral ulcers

- Steroid allergy

- Unexplained white patches

Children, Kenalog vs Orabase

Kenalog in Orabase (steroid):

- Paediatric safety not established.

- Children more susceptible to steroid side‑effects.

- At Happy Dentistry, we do NOT routinely recommend Kenalog in Orabase for children.

- Only use if specifically advised by a dentist/doctor/pharmacist.

Orabase Protective Paste (non‑steroid):

- Manufacturer recommends: Do NOT use longer than 7 days unless reviewed.

- May be used in children with adult supervision.

- For young children or unclear lesions, consult a health professional first.

Pharmacist‑only status

Kenalog in Orabase is pharmacist‑only and kept behind the counter.

Where to purchase

- Kenalog: pharmacy counter

- Orabase (plain): dental/first‑aid aisle

 Always follow your dentist’s instructions.
